Early in 2013, Dre Faivre, Matthew Gravolin, and Anthony Caruso launched Sydney hardcore outfit Hellions once their earlier project, the Bride, had dissolved. The trio swiftly gained traction within Australia’s hardcore community through raw, theatrical live shows, sharing stages with Deez Nuts, Hand of Mercy, and In Hearts Wake while also appearing on the Vans Warped Tour. Their first full-length, Die Young, was tracked in Thailand under producer Shane “Buddha” Edwards and issued by UNFD in September 2013. After a largely inactive 2014, the group returned to Thailand to cut a follow-up with the same producer; Indian Summer surfaced in early 2015, revealing broader sonic scope and greater maturity through added hip-hop and acoustic textures. Later that year, guitarists Josh Campiao and bassist Chris Moretti joined on backing vocals, rounding out the lineup that would track the band’s breakthrough record, Opera Oblivia, the next year. The 2016 release became Hellions’ biggest success and earned an ARIA nomination for Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album. To coincide with a 2017 Australian run supporting You Me at Six, the group issued a re-recorded take on album cut “24” featuring guest vocals from Josh Franceschi, backed by their rendition of Green Day’s “Jesus of Suburbia.”
