Biography
In 2013 the Des Moines, Iowa quartet Holy White Hounds assembled around Brenton Dean on vocals and guitar, Ambrose Lupercal on bass, Seth Luloff on drums, and James Manson on guitar, pulling sonic cues from early Beck, Black Keys, Queens of the Stone Age, and Nirvana. The band adopted the rock & roll motto “We're dirty but we're not unclean/We're mangy but you'd still let us sleep in your bed” and delivered their first EP, Oh Mama, in 2014, presenting a hook-driven fusion of quirky power pop and Midwest-rooted classic rock. That release paved the way for shared bills with Cage the Elephant, Wavves, Surfer Blood, and Cake. In 2015 the group released the blistering single “Switchblade” ahead of its debut full-length, Sparkle Sparkle, which surfaced that September.
