Hailing from the Netherlands, singer/songwriter Jana Mila crafts material steeped in the sunlit strains of American West Coast folk-rock, the textured sonics of contemporary country, and a keen sense of perception. Following the 2022 release of her alt-country single “When Times Get Rough,” her first full-length effort, Chameleon, arrived in 2024 and embraced a more urbane adult alternative pop framework laced with country echoes—an approach that secured her a place on Nashville’s New West Records.

Born Jana Mila (Yah-nuh MEE-lah) and raised in Amsterdam amid a household filled with contrasting musical traditions—her mother performed Brazilian repertoire, her father played saxophone in big bands, and her brother immersed himself in the music of India—she gravitated toward indie and folk textures during adolescence. Local performances soon gave way to the realization that her writing would resonate most powerfully elsewhere, prompting a 2022 journey to Nashville aimed at connecting with producers and labels.

The acoustic one-off “When Times Get Rough” quickly amassed millions of streams, paving the way for a creative alliance with Music City guitarist Todd Lombardo, whose prior credits include Kacey Musgraves’ Golden Hour, Star-Crossed, and Deeper Well along with contributions to Lady A and Niall Horan. Lombardo helmed the sessions, whose fusion of folk-rock and introspective songwriter pop, accented by country inflections, drew the attention of the respected indie imprint New West Records and led to the August 2024 release of her debut album, Chameleon.
