Biography
Swedish vocalist Linda Caroline Sundblad first attained national icon status in both music and fashion as the frontwoman of rock band Lambretta before shifting focus to a solo dance-pop trajectory. The group originated in 1993 as a three-piece unit whose trajectory remained limited until its members later approached a record-store proprietor in Linköping seeking vocalists. The store owner proved to be her father, Ulf, and although she was only 15—far younger than the other members—she left high school to become lead singer. Fronted by Sundblad, Lambretta issued three increasingly aggressive albums that enjoyed strong Scandinavian success between 1999 and 2004, generating multiple major hits that fused hard guitar rock with danceable pop rhythms and sometimes enlisted songwriting and production input from Swedish pop architect Max Martin. She also lent her voice to the Swedish hip-hop collective Infinite Mass on the 2001 single “She’s a Freak” and to the heavy-metal cello ensemble Apocalyptica on “Faraway Vol. 2” in 2003, additionally appearing on the cover of the latter group’s album Reflections with cello f-holes painted across her bare back in the manner of Man Ray. Throughout Lambretta’s run, press coverage and critical commentary fixated on Sundblad, celebrating her magnetic charisma and distinctive style that invited comparisons to Gwen Stefani, secured a Best Festive Style award from Swedish Elle, and supported a parallel modeling career. Observers repeatedly pressed her to launch a solo project, citing the band’s generational divide and deeming her its only authentic talent, yet she refused solo interviews and publicly affirmed her loyalty to her bandmates. That stance held until Lambretta dissolved after issuing its most abrasive album, 2004’s The Fight, which proved less commercially potent than prior releases. As the remaining members dispersed—two forming Psych Onation—Sundblad relocated to California, married, and began developing her independent work. Her solo debut, Oh My God, surfaced in November 2006 and featured co-writing contributions from Infinite Mass’s Tobias Karlsson, Max Martin and his Cheiron colleague Alexander Kronlund, a-ha’s Martin Landqvist, and Teddybears’ Klas Åhlund. The record introduced an exuberant, 1980s-rooted dance-pop sound that diverged sharply from Lambretta’s guitar-driven approach, with its opening singles “Oh Father” and “Lose You” claiming the top two positions on the Swedish charts.
