Biography
After fronting U.K. rock band the Wombats for 15 years, Matthew “Murph” Murphy launched a solo outlet called Love Fame Tragedy, stockpiling material that felt too personal for the group. Although the sound stayed close to his band’s style, the new songs emerged with greater rawness and introspection. His 2020 debut Wherever I Go, I Want to Leave drew directly from his relocation to the United States, especially its lead single “My Cheating Heart,” while the 2024 follow-up Life Is a Killer chronicled his path toward sobriety.
Murphy formed the Wombats in 2003 alongside bassist Tord Øverland Knudsen and drummer Dan Haggis, both fellow students at the Liverpool Institute for the Performing Arts. Their 2007 debut A Guide to Love, Loss & Desperation reached number 11 in the U.K. and its single “Let’s Dance to Joy Division” established the band’s approach of tightly wound alt-rock occasionally spiked with New Wave touches. The 2015 album Glitterbug, steeped in synth textures, brought the Wombats their first Billboard 200 entries; its track “Greek Tragedy” later surged as a viral hit after Oliver Nelson’s 2021 remix.
During promotion for the Wombats’ fourth album, 2018’s Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life, Murphy disclosed he had been quietly assembling outside songs sparked by his marriage, his move to America, and other private concerns that did not align with the band’s direction. A year later he began releasing material developed with longtime Wombats producer Mark Crew, Pixies lead guitarist Joey Santiago, and alt-pop producer Dan Nigro (Sky Ferreira, Olivia Rodrigo, Chappell Roan). Early singles “My Cheating Heart” and “Backflip” appeared alongside the EPs I Don’t Want to Play the Victim, But I’m Really Good at It (2019) and Five Songs to Briefly Fill the Void (2020), paving the way for Wherever I Go, I Want to Leave.
The Wombats reconvened for 2022’s Fix Yourself, Not the World, again enlisting Crew alongside producer Jacknife Lee; both returned for Love Fame Tragedy’s second album, Life Is a Killer, issued in 2024. Drawing partly from Murphy’s efforts to maintain sobriety and incorporating intimate voice notes from his wife Akemi Topel, the record featured the singles “Slipping Away” and “Don’t You Want to Sleep with Someone Normal?,” the latter reaching the Top 40 on Billboard’s alternative airplay chart.
