Biography
Madeline Edwards capitalized on opportunities opened by Kane Brown and Kacey Musgraves, channeling her heritage into expansive, boundary-free country that blends multiple influences. Her 2022 debut album Crashlanded embodies this exploratory spirit through excursions into dance-pop, energetic country, and introspective balladry.
Edwards was born in Santa Barbara, California, where childhood radio broadcasts during family drives to her mother’s relatives in Fresno introduced her to country. She began singing and studying piano by age five. Before entering high school, she and her family settled in Houston, Texas. During adolescence she embraced both country and pop, initially aiming to emulate Beyoncé.
The 2016 release of her sultry debut EP Light Out marked a stylistic turn toward Norah Jones, evident in piano-driven tracks of jazzy, soulful pop. That direction persisted on the 2018 single “Killin’ Me” and continued through the three 2019 singles “Wait by the Line,” “Tryna Make Sense,” and “Mirror.”
In early 2021 Edwards moved to Nashville with her husband. She issued the EP The Road that year, highlighted by the single “Thinking About You,” which retained traces of the earlier jazz-inflected sound. Country became her focus with the 2021 single “Best Revenge,” timed to her participation alongside the Highwomen on the Lady Gaga tribute album Born This Way: Reimagined, where the group performed “Highway Unicorn (Road to Love).” She closed the year with a appearance at the 55th Annual CMA Awards, sharing the stage with Mickey Guyton and Brittney Spencer.
Early 2022 brought the reflective single “Port City,” which anchored her self-titled EP released that June. Also in June she issued “Hold My Horses,” her first single for Warner Music Nashville, revealing a polished, energetic approach to country. To promote the new material she opened select dates for Chris Stapleton’s All-American Road Show tour and made her Grand Ole Opry debut that summer. Three more singles—“Why I’m Calling,” “The Wolves,” and “Too Much of a Good Thing”—preceded the November 2022 arrival of her full-length debut Crashlanded.
