Formed in Virginia Beach during 1994, Mindset set out to craft an aggressive sound while holding tightly to their own vision and outlook. Guitarist Don Campbell, born 25 July 1963, exited his earlier group and enlisted longtime associate John O’Neil, born 29 May 1964 on bass, to launch the project. They next added drummer Kenny Windley, born 30 May 1976, and vocalist Roddy Lane, born 3 August 1967, rounding out the lineup. The members’ varied histories infused the music with influences spanning Tool and Soundgarden through Deep Purple, yielding a driving yet melodic style shaped by dense, emotionally charged vocals. Once assembled, the quartet devoted four weeks to composing and refining songs for a debut EP produced with Stacy Heydon. Its low-end weight and hardcore edge positioned the band squarely within the rising extreme-metal scene. Strong enough to earn a performance at the 1995 Ticketmaster Music Showcase in Virginia Beach, the EP drew attention from record companies. Mindset ultimately joined Noise International Records and, after a 15-day session, delivered their self-titled first album, a collection blending furious hardcore with industrial-tinged heavy metal. Most lyrics sprang from personal relationships, yet the band also displayed irony and social commentary, notably on the track “If The Devil Wore Adidas,” which lampooned America’s appetite for fleeting trends. Though frequently likened to Korn, Mindset demonstrated greater depth across the extensive touring that followed.
