Biography
Nasty Cherry blend snarling rock with pop hooks, drawing equally from the Runaways and the Spice Girls. Their formation and initial activities in Los Angeles were captured in the Netflix series I'm with the Band, while the EPs Season 1 from 2019 and The Movie from 2021 showcased the tough and vulnerable facets of their sound.
The quartet consists of lead singer Gabby Bechtel, guitarist Chloe Chaidez, bassist Georgia Somary, and drummer Debbie Knox-Hewson. They came together in 2018 after Charli XCX encouraged Knox-Hewson, who had drummed for Charli during the Sucker period, to assemble an all-female rock band. Knox-Hewson brought in her friend Somary, a set decorator with credits that include Star Wars: Episode VIII: The Last Jedi and who picked up bass specifically for the group, along with Chaidez, who also fronts the similar band Kitten. The addition of Bechtel, who works as a model, photographer, and dancer in addition to singing, completed the lineup. The band then joined Charli XCX's Vroom Vroom Recordings imprint and devoted several months to songwriting with her, guided by touchstones such as The Craft, Heathers, the Strokes, and the Cure. Their first single, "Win," arrived in March 2019 under the production of Justin Raisen, another of Charli XCX's frequent collaborators. Additional tracks like "What Do You Like About Me" and "Music with Your Dad" came next, leading into the November 2019 debut of the Netflix docuseries I'm with the Band, which followed the group's formation and creative development. That same month brought Season 1, an EP containing both prior singles and new material shaped during the series. The electro-pop-tinged Season 2 EP appeared in July 2020 after collaboration with 100 gecs' Dylan Brady, and April 2021 saw the release of The Movie EP, a gentler and more introspective collection.
