A South Korean girl group assembled by ADOR, the Hybe subsidiary, NewJeans fuse vocal pop, R&B, and slyly woozy electronic/dance textures into a signature style. Their debut EP, issued under the group’s own name, reached the top of the Korean chart immediately upon its 2022 release, a feat matched the following year by the single “OMG.” Their second EP, Get Up, landed in July 2023 and claimed the top spot on the U.S. album chart. The Miami bass-tinged track “How Sweet” surfaced in 2024.

Formed to suggest both a fresh pop generation (“new genes”) and an affinity with fashion, NewJeans was put together by ADOR under Hybe Corporation CEO and former SM Entertainment visual director Min Hee-Jin. Auditions concluded in the opening weeks of 2022, and the five-member lineup—lead singer Minji alongside Danielle, Haerin, Hanni, and Hyein—was confirmed that March. The majority were chosen for their dancing as well as vocal abilities. The group issued its first single, “Attention,” in July 2022 and followed it almost immediately with “Hype Boy.” Anticipation generated by the early tracks, teaser videos, and the perception of suggestive lyrics drove hundreds of thousands of pre-orders for the self-titled debut EP, which debuted at number one in Korea that August and reached the Top 20 in Japan and on the Billboard World Albums chart. The 2023 single album containing “OMG” and the prior year’s “Ditto” also topped the Korean chart and earned triple-platinum certification. “Zero” arrived in April. Another number-one hit, “Super Shy,” preceded the July release of Get Up, which entered the chart at number two and surpassed one million copies sold. That sophomore project merged U.K. garage, drum’n’bass, and Jersey and Baltimore club rhythms with rich R&B, a combination that propelled the act to the summit of the Billboard 200. NewJeans issued NJWMX, a set of remixes and instrumentals, after the EP. “How Sweet,” accompanied by “Bubble Gum” and instrumental versions of both songs, followed in 2024.
