Biography
Informally coalescing during the mid-2010s, the drill collective Original Farm Boys—abbreviated OFB—drew its title from Broadwater Farm Estate, the Tottenham housing project that served as the upbringing site for numerous core participants. Breakthrough momentum arrived via founders Headie One and RV, whose status as a foundational drill pairing solidified after the 2017 release of their landmark mixtape Drillers & Trappers. As Headie transitioned into wider recognition by decade’s end, emerging voices within the crew advanced its sonic direction; SJ, BandoKay, and DoubleLz, operating under the streamlined OFB moniker, rapidly positioned themselves among the style’s rising prospects.
Tracing lineage to the remnants of the notorious North London crew Tottenham Mandem, the rap outfit Star Gang functioned as an early platform for several Tottenham talents on the ascent, prominently including Headie One (then credited as Headz) and RV. Operating beneath the Star Gang name through the early 2010s, the pair cultivated rapport on tracks such as “Youngers from Farm,” steadily carving entry points into the city’s road rap circuit. Aligning with evolving London sounds, the duo adapted accordingly: their 2016 joint project Sticks & Stones incorporated U.S.-style trap aesthetics, whereas 2017’s Drillers & Trappers embraced the city’s emergent drill wave. Producers spanning MKThePlug through M1OnTheBeat shaped the sessions, enabling the pair to cultivate an audience through incisive flows and evident chemistry. Affixing the #OFB hashtag to releases, they established the drill collective Original Farm Boys as a tribute to Broadwater Farm Estate. Although the initial roster proved broad, Headie and RV propelled OFB into wider visibility through appearances on freestyle platforms including Behind Barz and Hardest Out, marked by clipped phrasing and precise lyricism.
Following Headie’s ascent into U.K. mainstream circles—capped by the 2019 Top 10 single “18HUNNA”—and the development of solo paths among founding members, the subsequent wave of OFB rappers had already secured their footing. The Tottenham natives BandoKay, SJ, and DoubleLz, identified as the crew’s “youngers,” refined their craft alongside veteran affiliates before assuming leadership duties for the area’s sound by 2018. The 2018 single “Reality” and accumulated millions of views on the Next Up freestyle series preceded their decision to operate collectively; under the OFB name they issued the 2019 track “Ambush,” establishing themselves among drill’s most prominent figures. Despite SJ encountering legal challenges in the latter portion of 2019, the three still completed their debut mixtape Frontstreet, issued on Halloween that year.
