The Colchester, Essex siblings George and Johnny Marriot first shaped Pet Needs as a private bedroom venture. For the 2017 debut EP As Kites Fly by Pylons they enlisted Linton Pachent on bass and Jack Lock on drums. Inspired by Frank Turner, who would later produce the band’s opening two albums, the group refined its folk-tinged punk approach and built an early following through repeated shows across the South East of England.

An invitation for Turner to attend a London performance led to a lasting connection with the lineup, now completed by bassist Rich Gutierrez, and prompted his co-production contribution to the debut full-length. Captured in 2020 and released in early 2021 on Xtra Mile, Fractured Party Music paired spiky pop-punk with wry, sardonic lyrics and quickly attracted listeners. After a headline tour that stretched from late 2021 into the following year, the musicians returned to the studio with Turner once more in charge; the slightly harder-edged Primetime Entertainment surfaced in late 2022.

During 2023 the band toured the U.K. alongside the Lottery Winners, crossed the U.S. in support of the Bouncing Souls, and joined Flogging Molly’s European dates while simultaneously writing and recording a third album. Produced by George Perks (Enter Shikari, Mogwai, Skindred), Intermittent Fast Living appeared at the beginning of 2024.
