Formed in the aftermath of Lemmy’s death in 2015, Phil Campbell & the Bastard Sons arose as a hard-hitting old-school rock band headed by longtime Motörhead guitarist Phil Campbell.

Once Motörhead disbanded, Campbell disclosed plans for a solo album that would draw on guest appearances by Rob Halford, Joe Satriani, and Slipknot percussionist Chris Fehn, yet he simultaneously launched the new group with former Attack! Attack! singer Neil Starr plus his three sons—Todd on guitar, Tyla on bass, and Dane on drums. Though rooted in classic rock, the band’s songs explored a broader stylistic range than Motörhead’s catalog. Their self-titled debut EP arrived in 2016, and the first full-length, The Age of Absurdity, followed in 2018 on Nuclear Blast. Campbell then resumed work on his solo record, Old Lions Still Roar, which surfaced in 2019.

The Bastard Sons reconvened in 2020 to track their second album. Even as COVID-19 halted certain activities, they pressed ahead; engineered by Todd during lockdown and mixed by Soren Andersen (the Answer, Dead Daisies), the resulting We’re the Bastards appeared on Nuclear Blast at year’s end.
