Biography
Raised Fist, a long-running Swedish group operating in the progressive hardcore realm, forge a sound that merges raw aggression with broad appeal by refining their punk origins through a death metal lens. Their 1998 album Fuel, which earned admiration from Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson, already displayed bass and guitar breakdowns set against hardcore frameworks. Metalcore’s reach surfaced unmistakably on the 2001 record Ignoring the Guidelines. By Sound of the Republic in 2006, death metal had become inseparable from their taut musical character, yielding a punk approach that stood apart from any other European band of the era. American groups have repeatedly named them as a key influence, crediting the politically militant songwriting, elite-level musicianship, and explosive live presence. Following a 2013 deal with Epitaph, the band delivered From the North, an album built on wildly syncopated grooves, swinging momentum, and a hybrid of metal crunch with punk & roll drive.
The band formed in 1993 and took its name from a line in the Rage Against the Machine track “Know Your Enemy”: “…born with an insight and a raised fist…” European critics quickly praised the original lineup of Alexander “Alle” Rajkovic on vocals, Andreas “Josse” Johansson on bass, Marco Eronen on guitar, and Oskar Karlsson on drums. Early independent releases—the 1994 EP You’re Not Like Me, the 1996 EP Stronger Than Ever, and the well-received 1998 debut Fuel—underscored their resourceful, adaptable style. Ignoring the Guidelines served as their first proper major-label outing when it appeared in 2000 on Burning Heart. The ensuing tour drew strong crowds, prompting the addition of second guitarist Daniel Holmberg before the group returned to the studio the next year to create Dedication for their expanding circle of devoted listeners. Epitaph issued that album in fall 2002, a year after the early-material compilation Watch Your Step surfaced. Spring 2006 brought the fourth studio album Sound of the Republic, a ferocious hardcore-and-metal set produced by Daniel Bergstrand (In Flames, Meshuggah) and featuring new drummer Matte Modin (ex-Dark Funeral). Throughout that summer the band alternated headline shows with dates alongside Comeback Kid across Europe. They resurfaced in 2009 with Veil of Ignorance. A two-album agreement with Epitaph Records was signed in 2013, leading to the release of From the North in early 2015. After a world tour and festival headline appearances, the group entered an extended hiatus. They reconvened at Top Floor Studios in Gothenburg with producers Roberto Laghi and Jakob Herrmann, intent on changing their methods. For the first time they restricted the track list to ten songs and made that decision while writing inside the studio itself; any new composition judged strong enough by the collective would replace a previously chosen track. They also applied fresh rigor to vocal and drum production, granting those elements the same mixing priority previously reserved for guitars and melodies. Anthems arrived in October 2019, preceded by its title-track single.
