Biography
California native Renee Spearman has built a reputation as a Billboard-charting gospel singer and songwriter through both her independent releases and her longstanding creative alliance with Prez (Prez Blackmon II). Her professional path began in the late 1990s with session work, after which she and Blackmon issued two well-received albums during the following decade; she later launched her solo catalog with the 2012 project Whoa to Wow! and continued it with the 2019 set I Love Him.
Raised as the daughter of a pastor, she participated in church music activities from childhood. Her first recording credit came in 1995 when she directed the Prosperity Crusade Choir on the GRC release Change the World. Reality Entertainment issued a follow-up choir project, From a Songwriter's Perspective, in 1999. Shortly afterward she contributed background vocals to projects by Gladys Knight and Yolanda Adams.
Spearman and Blackmon established BlackSphere Entertainment in 2001. The next year the pair issued Celebrate, an urban contemporary gospel album billed to Renee Spearman and Prez featuring Prosperity; the title reached the Top 30 of Billboard’s gospel albums chart in 2003 and logged more than thirty weeks on the listing. Their second joint effort, He Changed Me, appeared on JDI Records in 2008 and peaked at number 13 on the gospel chart.
Spearman returned to the Billboard listings in 2012 with the gospel Top 25 single “Whoa to Wow!” featuring D.J. Rogers; JDI released the accompanying album that October. She appeared as a guest vocalist on Bobby Jones’s 2014 album Rejoice with Me! Early 2017 brought the standalone single “Good Morning (You Made It),” which later surfaced on her 2019 LP I Love Him; the title track, featuring Hezekiah Walker and Dr. Holly Carter, also became a hit for her.
