Biography
Spanish vocalist Shaila Dúrcal entered the world as the daughter of Rocio Dúrcal and Antonio Morales, two commanding presences in Spanish music. As the youngest of three siblings, she alone pursued a path in song. Signs of her vocal ambition and ability surfaced at the age of three, shaped by an eclectic childhood soundtrack that ranged from Earth, Wind & Fire to rancheras and flamenco. Her first television appearance came at twelve, when she performed alongside Nikka Costa on the program Noches. Serious training followed in Madrid, where she honed her voice until her mother invited her, at seventeen, to join a tour as a backing vocalist. Those travels exposed her to audiences across Latin America, the United States, and Europe, while she absorbed her mother’s repertoire and developed an instinct for crowd response. Eventually she elected to launch a solo career, settling in Mexico, the headquarters of her label, to prepare her debut album. Production was interrupted in March 2006 by the sudden death of Rocio, an event that prompted Shaila to dedicate the project to her mother’s memory both personally and artistically. The resulting Recordando, a reinterpretation of Rocio’s best-known songs, appeared in February 2007 and was succeeded the next year by Tanto Amor. Her 2009 release, Corazón Ranchero, marked a milestone when it performed more strongly on Mexican charts than on Spanish ones, and her fifth album, Asi, followed in 2011.
