Biography
Rap duo Tribe Mafia emerged from Austin’s underground rap scene in Texas, advancing from makeshift recordings inside a high school bathroom to stages on international tours. Their fusion of modern rap approaches first crystallized on the 2020 release Teepee Gang.
Chinasa Broxton and Carlos Moore established Tribe Mafia in 2010 during their high school years. While growing up in Austin, the pair absorbed the city’s constant musical pulse and tested numerous creative methods before settling on a distinctive approach. For several years the duo remained deeply engaged in the local scene, teaming with fellow Austin artists, appearing at the annual South by Southwest festival, and organizing listening parties that drew together the area’s creative community. Following a series of standalone tracks and singles, they issued the six-song EP For You in 2017, which showcased their mix of cloud rap production, R&B-inflected hip-hop, and restrained trap rhythms. The 2018 EP The Come Up shifted toward more aggressive beats and bolder vocal deliveries. In 2019 Tribe Mafia dropped the collaborative single “Like Cola” featuring vocalist Mikey See; the track infused their varied rap techniques with dancehall energy, received substantial radio rotation, and saw its video surpass one million views. That same year the duo joined Akon for a tour that reached Brazil. March 2020 brought their most developed project to date, the eight-song mixtape Teepee Gang. The release moved further from earlier restraint with vigorous rap cadences, robust beats, and notably polished production, while incorporating guest appearances from Bankroll Barbie, Sam Sage, and additional artists.
