Tyler Glenn first rose to visibility on the pop, rock, alternative, and dance charts as Neon Trees’ frontman and keyboardist before turning to solo work. A musician who learned his craft without formal training, he passed his early years in Southern California, the place where Neon Trees first formed, until he and guitarist Chris Allen moved to Provo, Utah to accommodate Allen’s schooling. Bassist Branden Campbell and drummer Elaine Bradley later joined, and the Utah quartet quickly earned notice for its high-energy hometown performances. Their new-wave-inflected style drew the attention of the Killers, who asked the band to open select dates on the 2008 North American tour.

Neon Trees signed with Mercury Records in early 2009 and were named Band of the Year by Salt Lake City’s City Weekly. The label’s first release from the group, Habits, appeared in early 2010 and sent the single “Animal” to number one on Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart. After issuing Picture Show in 2012, the band toured with the Flaming Lips and the Offspring and performed its hit “Everybody Talks” on that year’s edition of America’s Got Talent. Reuniting with Habits producer Tim Pagnotta for the 2013 album Pop Psychology, Glenn announced in March 2014 that he was gay. A comparable spirit of personal reflection shaped the record, released the following month. In 2015 the band issued the non-album single “Songs I Can’t Listen To,” and Glenn contributed to the holiday supergroup Band of Merrymakers on the album Welcome to Our Christmas Party.

Glenn issued his debut solo track in April 2016. The brusk electro-pop single “Trash” and its video stirred controversy by questioning the conservative tenets of the singer’s former faith, Mormonism. His first full-length project, Excommunication, followed on Island Records that fall.
