Originating from the modest Tennessee community of Scotts Hill, Whitney Duncan nurtured an early love for music that led her to perform in church settings before branching out into talent competitions, county fairs, and local festivals, sometimes journeying to adjacent states including Kentucky and Missouri. During her early teenage years she started making trips to Nashville, and by the time she reached her final year of high school she secured a recording contract, laying down multiple tracks that featured a duet she composed with Kenny Rogers titled "My World Is Over," later included on his compilation 42 Ultimate Hits. Although her association with that label concluded, she soon linked up with producer Mark Bright, who facilitated an introduction to songwriter John Shanks; following an acoustic performance showcase, Warner Bros. eagerly offered her a major-label agreement, prompting her to record material for the planned album Right Road Now with guidance from Bright and Shanks throughout 2007. In that identical year her independently issued self-titled Whitney Duncan project came out. From this endeavor the track "When I Said I Would" emerged as a single in 2008.
