Before taking up DJ work, Richard Abidin Breen—known professionally as ABS and of Turkish-Irish descent—would perform Michael Jackson material through both vocals and movement. That same enthusiasm for dance-pop drew him into the British boy band 5ive, whose run ended in September 2001. Executive producer Simon Cowell moved quickly to secure him a solo deal. The resulting debut arrived in August 2002 with the UK Top Ten single “What You Got,” built around samples of Andrea & Donna’s 1970s reggae hit “Uptown Top Ranking.”
