St. Louis native Amber Bullock captured the crown on BET’s 2011 gospel competition Sunday Best after nearly abandoning her dream before the audition even occurred. Her mother’s illness prompted a move to Dallas, yet a subsequent car accident left Bullock injured and forced her to send her daughter back to St. Louis to live with the child’s father. On the last day of local tryouts, Bullock happened to feel well enough to perform without the usual pain, impressing regulars Kirk Franklin and Donnie McClurkin right away. She ultimately prevailed over fellow finalists Michael Pugh and Andrea Helms, delivering her interpretation of “A City Called Heaven” in the season finale. That performance was later included on her debut EP Thank You, issued in late 2011 by Matthew Knowles’ Music World Gospel imprint.
