Among rappers emerging from Atlanta in the late 2000s, B.o.B distinguished himself markedly after securing his first major-label contract at age 17. His unconventional creative approach, even as his recordings adhered to the familiar Dirty South style, positioned him ahead of fellow Southern artists and prompted parallels to OutKast, above all that duo’s André 3000. Commercial ascent followed in 2010, when the chart-topping The Adventures of Bobby Ray yielded three Top Ten pop singles and produced five Grammy nominations, including Record of the Year for “Nothin’ on You” and Best Rap Album. After two further Atlantic projects, his discography expanded substantially through releases on his own No Genre label, spanning 2017’s The Upside Down through 2020’s Somnia.

Although born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Bobby Ray Simmons, Jr. spent his childhood on the east side of Atlanta in the intown suburb of Decatur. Music-making surfaced early as a pastime, and he played trumpet along with other instruments throughout grade school. By high school he had already obtained management and formed the production duo the Klinic. At 15 he sold one of his own beats to Slip-N-Slide recording artist Citty. Following his partner’s departure for college, B.o.B pursued a solo path and recorded the hazy, spoken-word-style marijuana tribute “Cloud 9,” which supplied the title track for his debut mixtape.

Around that period, B.o.B’s manager arranged entry to Club Crucial, the Atlanta venue owned by rap star T.I., where the teenage MC impressed attendees with a self-produced number. Industry veteran TJ Chapman, present in the crowd, agreed to co-manage the artist; one month later the partnership resulted in B.o.B signing with Atlantic and its Rebel Rock subsidiary, operated by Florida-based producer Jim Jonsin. His initial Atlantic single, 2008’s “Haterz Everywhere,” registered on Billboard’s Bubbling Under R&B/Hip-Hop singles chart. Soon afterward, XXL, Spin, MTV and additional outlets spotlighted him in “Artist to Watch” coverage, identifying him as the next Atlanta rapper poised for national breakthrough.

Following several mixtapes, some issued via a joint arrangement with T.I.’s Atlantic-supported Grand Hustle imprint, plus featured appearances alongside Killer Mike and T.I., B.o.B achieved mainstream success in 2010. Early that year he reached the Billboard Hot 100 summit with “Nothin’ on You,” featuring Bruno Mars, and climbed to number two with “Airplanes,” featuring Paramore’s Hayley Williams. Both tracks appeared on his April debut album The Adventures of Bobby Ray, which topped the Billboard 200, earned gold certification en route to multi-platinum status, and benefited from the Rivers Cuomo collaboration “Magic,” another Top Ten single. The album itself contended for Best Rap Album, while “Airplanes, Pt. II” received a nomination for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals and “Nothin’ on You” earned nods for Best Rap Song, Best Rap/Sung Collaboration and Record of the Year.

Originally conceived as a mixtape, B.o.B’s second album, the brasher yet still pop-oriented Strange Clouds, arrived in May 2012 and debuted at number five on the Billboard 200. Its title track, featuring Lil Wayne and issued months earlier, became the rapper’s fourth Top Ten single and earned platinum certification; “So Good” and “Both of Us,” the latter featuring Taylor Swift, likewise received RIAA certifications. The number 22 hit Underground Luxury followed in December 2013 and contained two further platinum singles: the assertive “We Still in This Bitch” (with T.I. and Juicy J) and the whistling “HeadBand” (with 2 Chainz). B.o.B returned in August 2015 with Psycadelik Thoughtz, a commercially released mixtape leaning more rock-oriented than prior work.

Thereafter B.o.B and Atlantic parted ways, leading the rapper to operate primarily through his independent No Genre label, also home to Scotty ATL and London Jae. Multiple mixtapes appeared through the balance of 2015 and 2016; four of them—Water, Fire, Earth and Air—were compiled as the commercially issued Elements in early 2017. Ether arrived that May as the series’ fifth installment and B.o.B’s fourth proper album. The Upside Down, Naga and Southmatic appeared before decade’s end. Productivity persisted into 2020 with Somnia, followed by the Lost Tapes compilation the next year. B.o.B opened 2022 with the singles “Vimana” and “Scenic Route.”
