Biography
CHUU, recognized equally as a television figure in her native South Korea, achieved solo chart success through warm contemporary pop after leaving Loona. She portrayed a character in the web drama Dating Class, hosted installments of Insane Quiz Show, and appeared as a competitor on King of Mask Singer prior to issuing her first official solo recording, the 2022 duet “lullaby” with B.I. Her debut EP, Howl, arrived the next year.
Kim Ji-woo, raised in Cheongju of North Chungcheong Province, derived her stage name CHUU from a rapid pronunciation of her given name. Entry into the entertainment field came in late 2017 when she joined the twelve-member girl group Loona as its tenth participant. The act secured international attention with the 2018 album [+ +] and repeated its Korean album-chart peak of number two via the early-2020 follow-up [#]. Throughout that period CHUU maintained a recurring role in Dating Class while co-hosting Insane Quiz Show.
Early 2020 brought CHUU’s appearance on King of Mask Singer, after which Loona notched a Korean Top Five single and topped the Billboard Heatseekers chart with the third EP [12:00]. She continued occasional television work as a panelist, spokesperson, and contestant while the group extended its Top Five run through the 2021 EP [&] and the 2022 release Flip That. Absences prompted by health concerns preceded her expulsion from Loona in late 2022 amid ongoing contract disputes.
Although prior soundtrack contributions existed, CHUU’s official solo debut occurred with mid-2022’s “lullaby,” a duet featuring former iKON member B.I. A solo reading of “ONE AND A HALF,” the 1990s hit originally recorded by Two Two, surfaced that September and was followed by a cover of Park Hye-kyung’s “Confession” plus the seasonal collaboration “Dear My Winter” with george. October 2023 saw the release of her first EP, Howl, which reached number three on Korea’s album chart.
