Citizen Four emerged as a Los Angeles-based boy band formed by Island Records, stepping into the opening created by the pause in activity from English superstars One Direction. Iowa brothers Carson and Conner Boatman joined New Jersey natives Austin Percario and X Factor finalist Josh Levi to round out the original roster, which unveiled its yearning dance-pop through the 2016 releases “Cold” and “Mercy.” Two further singles preceded the August 2017 announcement that the group and Levi were parting on amicable terms, at which point America’s Best Dance Crew alum Mikey Fusco came aboard. “Want You Back” climbed to number 21 on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart mere weeks afterward. October 2017 brought the next single, “My Name (Say It),” built around a sample of Destiny's Child's “Say My Name.”
