Biography
During the 2000s Courtlin Edwards first drew notice as half of the duo Pop It Off Boyz. Performing as CG alongside Nicholas Brown, who recorded under the alias Lil Action, he helped create the viral track “Crank Dat Batman,” a direct reply to Soulja Boy’s chart-topping single “Crank That.” After Motown picked up the recording for national distribution, the song climbed to number 64 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart in March 2008. The pair, based in Carbondale, Illinois, eventually parted ways before reuniting, yet Brown’s life ended in a car crash in 2014. Throughout that period Edwards issued solo material as Mr. CG while also supplying songs for fellow performers, among them the Trey Songz cut “Outside.” He later adopted the performing name Courtlin Jabrae—Jabrae being his middle name—and guested on releases by Trackdilla and Spade (“Come with Me”) as well as Schama Noel (“Can’t Be Broke Down”). In 2016, now on the eOne roster, he issued the introspective single “That Way,” which wove in elements of K.P. & Envyi’s late-’90s Top Ten pop success “Swing My Way.”
