Biography
The European dance scene witnessed notable achievements from production trio Dario G in the late 1990s, as they specialized in converting vintage pop material into fresh club hits. The group's name honors Crewe Alexandra's longtime manager. Paul Spencer and Scott Rosser, the founding pair, first crossed paths in 1989 while attending a Manchester college program focused on pop music and recording techniques. After finishing their coursework, they installed a compact studio inside Paul's Cheshire residence and started cutting and distributing material under assorted aliases through their self-operated label.
During 1996 they connected with Stephen Spencer, who bore no relation to Paul and held a post at one of dance music's leading independent imprints, and recruited him into the lineup. Once signed to Warner Records, the act delivered "Sunchyme," built around a prominent sample of Dream Academy's "Life in a Northern Town." Blocked from the summit only by Elton John's single tribute to Princess Diana, the track ranked among 1997's major successes, ascended to number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play Chart, and had its video adopted by the Red Cross for racial-equality initiatives.
Issued twelve months later, follow-up "Carnivale de Paris" achieved nearly comparable results. Adopted as an unofficial anthem for the 1998 World Cup, it peaked at number three and later received a fresh release ahead of the 2002 tournament. Third single "Sunmachine" reached number 17 while the accompanying debut album landed at number 26; closing single "Voices," which charted at number 37, appeared on the soundtrack to the hit film The Beach and earned the threesome a nomination for Best Dance Act at the MTV European Music Awards.
In 2001 the group resurfaced with permanent vocalist Ingfrid Straumstoyl after Stephen Spencer exited to chase separate ventures. Comeback release "Dream to Me," which lifted its central hook from the Cranberries' "Dreams," became their third Top Ten entry, yet successor single "Say What's On Your Mind" and album In Full Colour failed to register. They resurfaced in 2003 via "Heaven Is Closer," a reinterpretation of Fiction Factory's "Feels Like Heaven," and again in 2006 with "Ring of Fire," their reading of the Johnny Cash classic that had served as an anthem for Liverpool supporters during the 2005-2006 Champions League campaign. Founding member Paul Spencer died on June 17, 2024, at age 53 following a cancer diagnosis.
