David Otero became the second alumnus from Spanish power pop outfit El Canto del Loco to launch a solo path after cousin Dani, once the group imposed its own hiatus in 2009. Born in Madrid during 1980, he had trained in law and aeronautical management before entering the lineup as a replacement for original guitarist Iván Ganchegui. The band racked up four number-one albums and eleven chart-topping singles across the 2000s, one of them the Otero-penned “Despiertame.”

He seized the break to unveil his first solo project, Nada Lógico, in 2010 under the El Pescao alias borrowed from an El Canto del Loco song. Almost entirely self-written, performed, and produced, the album recycled several tracks previously set aside by the band and mixed electronica, indie pop, and folk elements while featuring contributions from producer Carlos Jean, DJ Wally Lopez, and Brazilian vocalist Ana Cañas.

After spending the next two years touring Spain, Otero paused to recharge creatively in Argentina and resurfaced with Ultramar in 2014. Concluding that the Pescao name had reached its limit, he reclaimed his own identity for the straightforwardly titled David Otero in 2017. Barely a year later arrived 1980, shaped by the decade’s fondly recalled sounds. The 2021 duets set Otero y Yo included appearances by Taburete, Dani Fernández, Carlos Sadness, and Ana Guerra. Otero then formed the trio 30s40s50s with singer Bely Basarte and producer Tato Latorre; their opening release, Piloto, emerged in 2023. He returned to solo work the following year with the introspective Inteligencia Natural, his sixth studio album.
