Originating from Kent, England, the DJ and producer David Zowie received his given name as a direct nod to David Bowie. Among the Bowie-inspired middle names bestowed upon him at birth, Zowie became the one he adopted for his stage identity, echoing the middle name of Bowie’s son Duncan. Notably, his actual family surname Batt coincides with that of David Sylvian, an artist whose formative recordings drew strong influence from Bowie. Far from emulating the Thin White Duke’s approach, Zowie pursued an entirely separate path in music. He began experimenting with electronic production during his early teens, moving fluidly among dance, reggae, and R&B styles while also participating in a vocal ensemble. A decisive step arrived in 2015 with the release of the club-oriented track “House Every Weekend,” which channeled the buoyant spirit of select early-’90s house productions—incorporating a sample drawn from the Nervous label catalog—alongside the rolling energy of early-2000s bassline house. After Virgin Records acquired the single, it ascended to the top of the U.K. pop chart in July 2015. That same year he supplied remixes for DJ Fresh & Adam F’s “Believer” and Rita Ora’s “Poison.”
