Biography
Davion Farris has written material for Tyrese's chart-topping Black Rose and Lucky Daye's Grammy-winning Table for Two, yet he also steps forward as a contemporary R&B performer whose unguarded, self-analytical lyrics rest on a vocal foundation drawn from gospel and soul. His trajectory moved in step with brothers SiR and D Smoke along with cousin Tiffany Gouché, the first artists he worked alongside. While carving out demand as a behind-the-scenes figure, Farris issued his solo debut in 2013 and then released both Trenier and With Pleasure four years afterward. The steps he took to land his recordings on television succeeded when a cut from With Pleasure aired during an episode of Lena Waithe's The Chi, prompting a deal with the Hillman Grad label; he answered in 2022 by unveiling his second EP, Moved.
Jackie Gouché, a longtime background singer and minister of music, cultivated the musical abilities of Farris and his brothers. His sense of purpose crystallized the moment he performed his first church solo, after which he sharpened recording techniques inside the family's home studio. Together with siblings Darryl (SiR) and Daniel (D Smoke) plus cousin Tiffany Gouché, he assembled the Woodworks, a group whose name nods to their Inglewood, California, base. The collective registered its initial impact in 2007 via Jaheim's "Never," a number 12 R&B/hip-hop single and Adult R&B Songs chart-topper that Farris co-wrote. He supplied additional songs to Lloyd, the Pussycat Dolls, and Ginuwine in the ensuing years, and during that stretch he earned one of his earliest background-vocal credits on his mother's gospel album The Way You See, produced by his uncle, acclaimed bassist Andrew Gouché. Farris issued his self-titled debut album quietly in 2013.
Further strides followed over the next several years as he collaborated with Trey Songz, Chrisette Michele, Jill Scott, and Tyrese, co-writing half the tracks on the Billboard 200-topping Black Rose. He then focused more energy on his own catalog, self-releasing the Trenier EP—named after his middle name—and the With Pleasure LP in 2017, the same year three of his compositions landed on Mary J. Blige's Top Ten hit Strength of a Woman. Entering the 2020s, Farris co-wrote and appeared on brother D Smoke's "Fly," a single that rapidly amassed millions of streams and spotlighted the album Black Habits, whose cover displayed a Farris family photograph. He also co-wrote "Falling in Love" for Lucky Daye's Table for Two, which captured the Grammy for Best Progressive R&B Album.
Farris reached fresh listeners with his solo output once the With Pleasure track "Make Love" featured in an episode of The Chi. The placement secured a recording agreement with Hillman Grad, the Def Jam-supported offshoot of creator Lena Waithe's production company. He marked his Hillman Grad bow in 2021 with "Sometimes," which surfaced in another installment of The Chi. A pair of additional singles paved the way for the May 2022 arrival of Moved, an EP whose seven songs Farris co-wrote and co-produced.
