Biography
Mexican punk-pop outfit División Minúscula first appeared in 2001, yet widespread commercial breakthrough arrived only with the 2006 release of their second album, Defecto Perfecto. The group had originated six years earlier in the northeastern Mexican city of Matamoros, Tamaulipas, featuring Javier Blake on vocals and guitar, Ricci Perez on guitar, Kiko Blake on drums, and Alex Luque on bass. After moving to Monterrey, Nuevo León, to pursue higher education, the musicians caught the attention of Toy Hernández from the rap collective Control Machete, who placed them on his boutique imprint Sones del Mexside. Their initial full-length, Extrañando Casa, arrived that same year and stood out within Mexico, where few local acts delivered American-style punk-pop in Spanish; the tracks “Televidente” and “Cursi” became radio favorites. Another half-decade elapsed before Defecto Perfecto emerged, as the members completed their studies, yet the record surpassed its predecessor in reach, yielding the singles “Sismo,” “Veneno es Antídoto (S.O.S.),” and “Sognare” while securing two MTV Video Music Award nods in the Promising Artist and Best Alternative Act categories.
