Formed during the mid-'90s, the Peruvian Latin rock band Dolores Delirio brought together guitarist Jeffrey Parra, drummer Josué Vásquez, and singer Ricardo Brenneifen. Their earliest output included a self-titled demo and the subsequent releases Concierto En La Catolica and En El Condorock. Navaja Producciones put out the group's debut album, Cero, in 1995. Two years afterward the live recording Dolores Delirio appeared on the Miami-based label Barbarosa Music, after which the band mounted a successful tour across Peru. Jeffrey Parra died in 1998. To commemorate his role in the local rock scene, the surviving members maintained the lineup and released the compilation Uña y Carne, Las Canciones de Dolores Delirio, which gathered their strongest material. Once instrumentalist José Inoñán came aboard, the trio contributed "Why Can't I Be You" to a tribute album honoring goth rock act the Cure and then moved to Sony Music, where they completed the 2000 album Raíz.
