Fito Cabrales departed from Los Platero y Tu, the Spanish rock band where he had served as lead singer, during 1998 to pursue an alternate musical direction. He assembled the ensemble Fito & Fitipaldis, whose sound merges soul, pop, swing, flamenco, Tex-Mex, and Latin jazz. Cabrales has described the project by stating that "everything has a place in this emotional, complex-free music." His open-ended stance toward composition appears in the remark: "I would like everybody to understand these songs their own way. They are just songs. So much work, so much worrying, so much thinking about them and finally...they are just songs."

After inking a deal with DRO Atlantic, the band issued its debut recording A Puerta Cerrada (A Closed Door) in 1998, followed by Los Sueños Locos (The Crazy Dreams) in 2001. The 2003 album Lo Más Lejos, A Tu Lado (The Farthest from Your Place) entered the Spanish charts at number two within its opening fortnight and far surpassed initial sales forecasts. Extensive live work carried the musicians across Spain and into major European halls.

The fourth studio effort, Por la Boca Vive el Pez (Fish Live for the Mouth), arrived in 2006, ascended to number one, and earned four-times platinum status, confirming Fito & Fitipaldis among Spain’s leading acts. Three years later the fifth album, Antes de que Cuente Diez (Before I Count Ten), likewise reached the top position and received four-times platinum certification. Concert activity continued at a steady pace while new recordings remained scarce until March 2014, when the live set En Directo Desde el Teatro Arriaga appeared. That release preceded the studio album Huyendo Conmigo de Mí, which became the third consecutive Fito & Fitipaldis studio album to top the Spanish charts.
