Biography
Hailing from Spain, José Maria Sanz Beltrán—professionally known as Loquillo—established himself as a leading rock vocalist after fronting the rockabilly- and punk-infused outfit Loquillo y los Trogloditas. Born December 22, 1960, in Barcelona, he grew up in the working-class Clot district within a modest household. An avid competitor on the court during his early years, he played for Badalona’s youth basketball squad. That athletic promise drew the attention of talent scouts and opened doors to the music industry. In 1980 a Cuspide media representative spotted Beltrán—already performing under the Loquillo moniker—on television and extended an immediate recording offer, enlisting the stylistic guidance and song choices of contemporaneous acts Los Rebeldes and Los Intocables. He cut several singles alongside Los Intocables before assembling his own ensemble.
By 1983 the lineup Loquillo y los Trogloditas had taken shape, featuring Loquillo on vocals, Igor Paskual on guitar and vocals, Josep Simón Ramirez on bass, Laurent Castagnet on drums, J.R. Vericad on keyboards, and Guillermo Martín on lead guitar and vocals. Their debut album, El Ritmo del Garage, appeared that same year and signaled the emergence of a durable industry presence. Over subsequent years Loquillo y los Trogloditas solidified their standing among the foremost exponents of rock en español. Between 1983 and 2006 the group issued nineteen albums, placing Loquillo among the genre’s most productive figures.
In 2008 he ended a three-decade partnership with los Trogloditas to launch the solo project Balmoral—his first independent outing since Nuevo Tragos in 1999. Subsequent solo efforts included the 2011 release Su Nombre Era el de Todas las Mujeres and the 2012 concert recording Loquillo en Madrid.
For the 2015 album Código Rocker, Loquillo collaborated with the veteran rockabilly revivalists the Nu Niles; the record climbed to the top of the Spanish charts. He followed with the 2016 solo studio album Viento del Este, which likewise succeeded commercially and secured his second consecutive number-one position in Spain.
