Dominican-bred Bronx native Fvrthr Mendoza came from a household steeped in music, where his father, a multi-instrumentalist, urged him to develop his talents in singing, rapping, and songwriting. Mendoza cultivated a fluid approach that pulled from many sources, moving rapidly between introspective, falsetto-driven R&B and sharper trap beats. He often pointed to his wide-ranging listening habits as the source of this stylistic range, naming Tears for Fears, Nirvana, Phil Collins, and other artists outside typical rap circles among his formative influences. He adopted the name FVRTHR, noting in interviews that it could be read as either “Farther” or “Further.” His first release, the 2016 EP The FVR, drew swift notice from trap superstar Fetty Wap, who signed Mendoza to his Zoo Gang label during their initial encounter. FVRTHR then recorded his debut full-length, GHB Regime—“Go Hard Boys Regime”—issued in April 2017; the project included a Fetty Wap cameo on the track “Must Be Nice.”
