Biography
American pop vocal quartet Good NEWZ Girls originated when two A&R executives partnered with the Nickelodeon network to assemble the act. Keeping four powerful teenage voices and broad commercial appeal in view, the members tracked their R&B-infused first EP, Winter Getaway, during 2021 and issued it to coincide with the U.S. Thanksgiving season.
The project itself took shape that same year as the vision of Tyran “Ty Ty” Smith and Jay Brown, both of whom had previously collaborated with Rihanna and additional artists across capacities that included musician, arranger, producer, and A&R duties. Envisioning a successor to the Pussycat Dolls or Fifth Harmony, the pair joined forces with Nickelodeon to recruit a multicultural lineup of versatile performers—singers, dancers, and actors—who also projected an upbeat outlook. The search yielded Mikaela Astel of Queens, New York, a contestant on the sixteenth season of The Voice in 2019; Nayah Damasen of California, already slated for the 2022 Nickelodeon musical Monster High: The Movie; Isabel Gonzalez of Teaneck, New Jersey, an alumna of Acapop! Kids; and Baylee Morrison, a student athlete from Upstate New York. From the outset, Astel’s skills as a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist positioned her as the ensemble’s creative center. All four members were either sixteen or seventeen when Winter Getaway appeared in November 2021. Although the endeavor was developed inside the Nickelodeon orbit, the group did not receive its own series; their debut video for the track “Let It Snow” therefore premiered exclusively on the TeenNick and NickMusic networks.
