Huichol Musical

Huichol Musical, a five-member group based in Mexico’s Jalisco region along the Sierra Madre Occidental, fuse native traditions with present-day sounds. Their moniker derives from the Huichol people, the native inhabitants of that same mountain range whom the Aztecs once referred to as “the Ancient Ones.” The ensemble entered the major-label arena in 2008 by issuing Desde México... “Cumbia Cusinela” through Machete Music, an imprint tied to Universal. The album’s fresh blend of indigenous elements and contemporary regional Mexican styles quickly turned it into a phenomenon, yielding the hit singles “Cumbia Cusinela” and “La Cusinela,” the first of which incorporates verses performed in the Huichol tongue. ~ Jason Birchmeier
