Jonas served as the outlet for cock rock renaissance man Jonas Tomalty, a Montreal-born music industry veteran whose career began at age three in a children’s choir and continued when he joined tours with his father, Rick. Tomalty assembled the alt-rock group Rubberman upon turning 20, and the band claimed victory in Montreal station CHOM’s yearly L’Esprit talent contest in 1999. He next spent time as frontman of Blues Blooded, then assembled Jonas in 2004 alongside guitarist Corey Diabo, bassist Domenic Romanelli, and drummer Ange E. Curcio. The group issued its self-titled debut later that same year, drawing notice through a version of the Stevie Nicks classic “Edge of Seventeen.” An early slot supporting Van Halen further elevated Jonas, and once their audience expanded, filmmaker Jean-Francois Pilon devoted twelve months to capturing the band’s touring routine. The finished documentary Jonas: The Quest appeared in 2007, arriving soon after the band’s hit second album Suite Life.
