Justin Love, hailing from New Jersey, had already begun earning recognition through his own romantic R&B material before co-authoring the 2016 song “Focus,” which emerged as a major success for H.E.R. With his visibility increasing, he refined his ethereal, intimate approach on the 2018 project When Love Returns and on 2019 releases such as “Runaway” and “Bad Mind.”

Raised in Cliffside Park, New Jersey, Love became self-taught as a singer, songwriter, and producer, absorbing teenage influences from Timbaland and Babyface. The smooth, affectionate R&B aesthetic he had shaped by 2015 drew critical notice for the EP Dreams of Love II. His co-writing contribution to H.E.R.’s “Focus” earned a 2017 Grammy nomination and expanded his audience considerably. Subsequent output included the 2018 singles “Love Again” and “Bed Springs,” the second of which appeared on his nine-track EP When Love Returns, issued later that year. After moving to Los Angeles, Love sustained his progress in 2019, most notably with the hit single “Runaway.”
