Los Astros de Durango, whose name means "The Stars of Durango," originated with the purpose of illuminating the spirits of their community. Saxophonist Gabriel Ruiz, vocalist Francisco Ramírez, bajo sexton/keyboard player Israel Monsiváis, electric bassist Israel Ortiz, drummer Marín Mendoza, and vocalist Antonio Elías del Rio assembled the group during the 1980s. Modeling their approach on idols Los Tigres del Norte, the musicians received guidance from norteño legends Los Montañeses del Álamo. In common with other ensembles from Durango’s renowned musical territory, Los Astros gained visibility through engagements at parties, festivals, and dance halls. Across the 1990s the ensemble cultivated an expansive audience and a substantial catalog of recordings. By defining their music as "hardcore norteño," the band established core stylistic precedents for the Duranguense surge that emerged after 2000. The 2004 album Vuelve Mi Amor marked their initial major commercial breakthrough, as the hit singles "La Milpa" and the title track "Vuelve Mi Amor" secured placements in multiple regional Mexican categories. The following year’s release Amor de Lejos expanded their reach further, earning a nomination for Billboard’s Regional Mexican Song of the Year award on the strength of the single "Los Vergelitos."
