A vocalist steeped in soul and R&B, MikexAngel cultivated a devoted underground audience through his crystalline tone and effortless phrasing, which also drew the guidance of Trey Songz. Raised in Virginia from birth, he explains that his stage name is pronounced “Mike Angel,” with the inserted x serving purely stylistic ends. His fascination with singing surfaced at age three, when he began capturing his own voice on his grandmother’s tape recorder and analyzing the playback for improvement. Church services supplied additional support, where pastors and choir members first dubbed him with his performance moniker after declaring that his voice resembled that of an angel. While attempting to convert his abilities into steady employment, he held assorted daytime positions, among them shifts at Starbucks and Amazon, until his prospects shifted upon meeting Mu, the elder sibling and manager of R&B star Trey Songz. Impressed by the material, Mu arranged for Songz to hear the tracks “Boss” and “Chill.” Months afterward, word arrived that Songz intended to place some of Angel’s work on an upcoming mixtape. The resulting project, Anticipation 3, placed Angel on eight separate cuts, after which Songz invited him to open shows on tour. Subsequently, Mu and Songz placed Angel under contract with their 300 Entertainment imprint, distributed through Atlantic, which issued his first full-length effort, Nothin 2 Somethin, during June 2017.
