Detroit natives Drew Phillips and Ben Berry founded Moke Hill after moving from their hometown to Los Angeles. The band’s output spans gently chamber-pop-inflected indie rock and more reflective singer-songwriter material. Both songwriters handled guitar and vocals, enlisting drummer Dash Hutton, bassist Tim Hutton, and multi-instrumentalist Chris Reynolds on synth, percussion, and auxiliary parts for recordings and shows; Ben Roche joined later as an additional musician. Their compositions, built from precisely articulated acoustic layers and occasional understated electronic passages, first appeared on a self-titled EP issued in 2014. That release echoed the inward-looking production of Beck’s most subdued work while displaying more refined instrumentation and unconventional arrangement choices.
