Pixel

Formed in 2010 in Oslo, Norway, the modern creative jazz-pop quartet Pixel originated under bassist and singer Ellen Andrea Wang. She had first studied classical violin and piano before taking up the double bass at age 17. Educated at the Norwegian Academy of Music, Wang blends assured bass work with an indie pop-inflected vocal approach inside Pixel, whose bass-trumpet-saxophone-drums lineup omits any chordal instrument in the manner of the classic Ornette Coleman Quartet. Trumpeter Jonas Kilmork Vernøy, tenor and soprano saxophonist Harald Lassen, and drummer Jon Audun Baar complete the group; all three likewise trained at the Norwegian Academy of Music and have pursued multiple jazz and rock projects. Cuneiform issued the quartet’s debut album Reminder in 2012 and released its sophomore effort We Are All Small Pixels the following year.
