Quiver emerged as a melodic UK progressive rock outfit that sometimes veered toward country rock yet found greater traction once it absorbed the Sutherland Brothers. Guitarist and vocalist Tim Renwick, born 7 August 1949 in Cambridge, England, had previously played in Junior’s Eyes; alongside Cal Batchelor on guitar, vocals and keyboards, he brought in Cochise drummer John ‘Willie’ Wilson, born 8 July 1947 in Cambridge, England. The quartet—completed by former Village bassist Bruce Thomas, born 14 August 1948 in Middlesbrough, Cleveland, England—cut its self-produced debut album with saxophonist Dick Parry as guest, then reconvened for Gone In The Morning. Warner Brothers Records ended the relationship after both releases failed to register commercially. Fresh material proved elusive, prompting the group to combine forces with the Sutherland Brothers late in 1972; keyboardist Pete Wood, born in Middlesex, England and deceased 1994 in New York, USA, joined the expanded line-up. Island Records soon signed the act, which notched several chart entries amid further personnel shifts. Renwick later founded 747 and Kicks before establishing himself as a sought-after session guitarist, touring with Pink Floyd and Mike And The Mechanics. Wilson subsequently performed with the Coyotes, while Thomas joined Elvis Costello’s backing band the Attractions. Above all, Quiver is remembered as the first act to appear at London’s legendary Rainbow Theatre.
