Born on March 9, 1972, in Hong Kong, Ronald Cheng is the son of Norman Cheng, the former Universal Music chairman. His solo singing career commenced in 1996 through an association with Universal, beginning with Mandarin-language recordings that established his reputation across Taiwan. Following several years of achievement in the Mandarin market, he moved into the Cantonese market during the late ’90s while issuing albums in both languages. That rising trajectory came to a sudden stop when a drunken assault incident aboard an international flight in 2000 turned into a tabloid sensation. In the aftermath of the notorious airplane incident, he ceased recording new music and turned instead to acting in films. His 2003 comeback album Please Help Me marked a return to the Cantonese music market.
