Forming the London-based duo Solomon Grey are Tom Kingston and Joe Wilson, who first connected in Oxford, Wilson’s birthplace. United by their passion for music, the pair began collaborating on compositions inspired by James Murphy and Little Dragon. Relocating to Ireland’s western shores to escape London’s bustle enabled them to adopt the Solomon Grey name for their work. After Kingston moved to Australia, Wilson soon joined him; the two transported their studio equipment and spent two years writing, producing, and refining their sound. Their early 2013 return to the United Kingdom resulted in a partnership with the Black Butter label that yielded the debut single “Gen V,” which earned critical acclaim including on BBC Radio One. The follow-up single “Firefly” arrived late that year. Further projects included scoring the Irish tourism film The Wild Atlantic Way as well as the BFI features Gozo and The Casual Vacancy, the latter being the 2015 BBC adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s tragicomic novel. Also in 2015 came Selected Works, a compilation of their material. Their self-titled debut album appeared via Decca in 2016, after which they composed the score for the 2017 BBC drama The Last Post. Their sophomore album, Human Music, followed in 2018.
