Sophie Cates occupies the intersection of spectral introspection and insistently melodic electronic pop. Late in the 2010s, performing as Silver Sphere, she drew widespread notice with the moody single “Drinking Games,” a streaming phenomenon that secured her a major-label deal. She soon returned to independent status and began issuing material under her own name. A run of 2022 singles demonstrated her tightening command of pop craftsmanship, a path she extended on the 2024 album Supernova.

Born in Los Angeles, Cates relocated with her family to the Boston region during childhood. She absorbed a wide range of music growing up, with Taylor Swift emerging as a key influence. While still a teenager she attended a summer session at Berklee College of Music, where her production abilities advanced rapidly. After finishing high school she enrolled at Columbia College in Chicago to study the music business, all the while creating her own songs. A publishing agreement obtained during those years led her to withdraw from school and relocate to New York.

Under the Silver Sphere moniker she issued her first single, “Drinking Games,” in 2018; the track spread quickly across streaming platforms. Her debut album, yikes!, came out on Human Re Sources in October 2019. The project’s reception earned her a move to RCA Records, which released the EP All My Boyfriends in September 2020.

She parted ways with RCA in 2021 and resumed using her birth name, Sophie Cates. Following a featured appearance on Natasha Hunt Lee’s June 2022 single “Bad Mood,” she issued “Nasty,” then “Cardigan,” and closed the year with the Basement Party EP. In 2023 she joined Internet Girl on the single “I Don’t Reply,” before returning with Supernova in early 2024, her first full-length released as Sophie Cates.
