Biography
Portugal found its ideal example of a thriving adult alternative group in Toranja. Tiago Bettencourt, handling lead vocals along with guitar and piano duties, initiated the band's creation. He assembled a lineup featuring Ricardo Frutuoso on guitar, Dodi—born Jorge Pamplona—on bass, and Rato—born Pedro Lima—on drums. The group immediately pursued every available performance opportunity. By 2001, their efforts yielded results when "Fome (Nesse Sempre)" appeared on a compilation for unsigned acts and earned some national radio exposure, despite ongoing criticisms that their sound, particularly Bettencourt's vocals, mirrored that of renowned Portuguese singer/songwriter Jorge Palma. Festival appearances during the summer ensued, followed by the 2002 release of another track, "Toma a Tua Bola de Football."
This groundwork preceded their first full-length record. The energetic single "Cenário (Janela No Rio)" built anticipation for Esquissos, which came out in the beginning of 2003. Sales started sluggishly but picked up once the follow-up single "Carta," a tender acoustic ballad about lost love, featured in a television advertisement and a popular soap opera's music. It turned into a major hit that season, propelling Esquissos to platinum certification while the band filled concert halls through 2004. They soon returned to the studio for their next effort. Segundo emerged in May 2005, where "Laços" received solid radio play alongside "Música de Filme." Although it achieved gold status, its sales reached only half those of the previous album. Following the conclusion of tour dates, the members declared an open-ended break in early 2006 that continues to this day. Meanwhile, Tiago Bettencourt put out a solo project in 2007 that met with fair success, and the remaining musicians launched Rizoma as a side endeavor, issuing its first album independently that same year.
