Essex trio Twenty Twenty developed a massive teen fanbase through savvy social-media tactics and a punk-pop style reminiscent of Busted and McFly, even without widespread radio backing. Brothers Sam Halliday, who handled lead vocals and guitar, and Jack Halliday on bass launched the project in 2009 by recruiting drummer Sonny Watson-Lang, prompting all three to pause their university work. Drawing from blink-182 and the Jonas Brothers, the group embarked on relentless U.K. tours, opened for Saving Aimee and Go:Audio, issued the independent EPs Forever and Raise Your Hands, and ultimately secured a Geffen Records contract. Capitalizing on their digital reach, they broadcast studio sessions for their debut album alongside Preston of the Ordinary Boys, Ricky Ross of Deacon Blue, and Julian Emery of Lissie via MySpace, then issued their first Geffen single, “Worlds Apart,” in 2010.
