Biography
Born Asa Asuncion in 1989 and raised in Washington, D.C., Yung Gleesh first gained notice through his sharp-edged personality and elusive approach, initially within the city's go-go community and later as a confrontational solo artist. A run of self-made mixtapes helped him reach listeners nationwide and secured guest appearances alongside Gucci Mane, A$AP Rocky, and additional acts. Sustained recording and performances eventually drew attention both to his lyrics and to the particular footwork he introduced under the name Gleesh Walk. Those steps received extended exposure in A$AP Rocky's "Multiply" video and in the clip for his own single "Pew Pew," each of which surpassed several million streams.
Before turning to rap, he served as percussionist in TOB, the go-go band he co-founded. His earliest rap output arrived in the early 2010s through unvarnished singles and mixtapes. Releases such as Ain't Shit Changed and Cleanside's Finest 3 displayed his movement among different modes, with the track "Wasabi" anticipating the mumble rap wave that followed in later years. A$AP Rocky's 2014 video for "Multiply" devoted a lengthy sequence to his dancing rather than a verse, and the clip ultimately exceeded 40 million views. Further high-profile work included performances with Yung Lean, A$AP Mob, and others. The activity prompted the previously unsigned rapper to sign with Asylum Records in 2017, after which the label issued his Gleesh mixtape the next year.
