Biography
Anabel Englund delivers her vocals with a smooth, sultry quality and operates as a Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter whose signature style centers on airy, affectionate club tracks. She first gained traction in the early 2010s via featured appearances alongside the electronic dance outfit Hot Natured and producer MK, while also forming one half of the piano-centric duo Suburban Nightlife. Beyond those frequent guest spots, she stepped forward as a solo act with the arrival of her debut full-length, Messing with Magic, in 2020; the set yielded dance airplay successes such as "Picture Us" and "Waiting for You." Further solo and collaborative releases arrived in quick succession, among them the 2021 single "Deja Vu" alongside Oliver Heldens, the 2022 track "LOW" with both Heldens and Tchami, and the 2023 solo release "a lesson in chemistry," which quickly found its way onto dancefloors.
Although born in New York, Englund was raised in California within a Hollywood household. She refined her vocal abilities through youth-group performances and composed material for family-oriented television programming before shifting attention to her personal catalog. Throughout 2010 and 2011 she wrote and delivered delicate, minimally arranged piano ballads both independently and under the Suburban Nightlife banner. A meeting with Chicago DJ Lee Foss at an L.A. performance led to an invitation to supply vocals for the Electricity EP by Foss & MK, which appeared on the Hot Creations label—run by Foss and Jamie Jones—in late 2012 and marked her entry into house music. Shared stage time with the Human Life production collective further shaped her live presence, one informed by the style and sound of her idol Madonna. Dim Mak issued the euphoric "In Time," her July 2012 collaboration with Josh Anaya's Peace Treaty. By the following summer she had joined Hot Natured on the tasteful '90s house throwback "Reverse Skydiving," which entered the U.K. singles chart. Pleasure State paired with her for the 2014 EP Ghost in the System. A steady stream of additional team-ups occupied the remainder of the decade, adding Tommy Trash, Taches, Rybo, and others to her credits.
While continuing as a sought-after voice on electronic anthems, Englund simultaneously developed original solo work that surfaced as 2016's "London Headache" and 2018's "So Hot." The 2019 single "Messing with Magic" previewed her first full-length under the same title. Issued in late 2020 on Ultra Music, Messing with Magic included contributions from MK, Lee Foss, and Jamie Jones; its dance-radio standouts comprised the solo cuts "Picture Us" and "Waiting for You" plus an MK and Nightlapse remix of "So Hot" that sat beside the album's official solo version of the track.
A further wave of collaborative singles drove Englund's streaming figures into the tens of millions, with 2021's "Deja Vu" (featuring Oliver Heldens) and 2022's "LOW" (with Heldens and Tchami) among the highlights. In 2023 she issued material that included the affectionate Kaleena Zanders collaboration "Anything 4 U" and the pulsing solo single "a lesson in chemistry." She opened the following year with "Cutting Loose," a release shared with Disco Lines and J. Worra.
