Among the various aliases shared by Judge Jules and Darren Tate, Angelic proved the most approachable. Rigid kick drums and pop-structured arrangements supplied the base for Amanda O'Riordan’s passionately charged vocals. Formerly employed as a graphic designer, O’Riordan joined forces with Jules and Tate after marrying the former, supplying trance producers with original vocal melodies instead of the usual practice of sampling dated soul material. The outcome was material such as Angelic, candid dance-pop positioned between Sarah McLachlan, St. Etienne, and Tall Paul. The singles “It’s My Turn,” “Can’t Keep Me Silent,” and “Stay With Me” earned strong chart placements throughout 2000 and 2001, yet the developing trio met mounting disapproval from dance-club tastemakers with every new release. ~ Dean Carlson
